Xavier has Another Strong Morning at A-10 Meet

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The third day of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo saw two more Xavier swim records fall. Junior Neil Reierson and freshman Matt Marcus each established new school records. The Musketeers also had a strong morning in the preliminary races as the XU men will return 11 swimmers tonight, while the XU women have 14 returning for the final and consolation heats.
Reierson established his new school record in the men's 100 fly and finished with a time of 51.03. He broke current teammate Dave Janszen's old mark of 51.15 set in 2003 en route to his fourth place finish.
Marcus earned the new school record with a time of 58.25 in the men's 100 breast. The freshman broke a seven-year-old record by 0.42 seconds. Former XU standout Louis Dissel held the previous record and set the mark in 1999. Marcus finished fifth overall in the event.
Xavier's Jill Winhusen started out the morning session with a tenth place finish in the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:42.64. Winhusen bested her career-high time by over three seconds and will return tonight to swim in the consolation heat of the event with classmate Bridget Benner. Benner posted a time of 4:45.10 in the event and finished 12th overall.
In the men's 400 IM, current XU record holder Dave Janszen just missed his own record by a second and will enter tonight's final heat as the top finisher in the event. The senior completed the race in a time of 4:02.91. Sam Cutter-Wilson will also return tonight to compete in the consolation heat as the junior touched the wall in a time of 4:10.07, a season best time by over seven seconds.
The next event found the Musketeers land five swimmers in the top 16. Senior Sarah Brown and freshman Alissa Schriner will return to compete in the women's 100 fly finals this evening. Brown finished the race in a time of 58.66 for fifth place, while Schriner ended in a time of 58.98 for eighth place. Jill Winhusen, Amber Thompson and Mary Kuhnen were the other three Musketeers returning for the evening swim as all three will compete in the consolation heat. The trio finished in 11th, 14th and 15th place and posted times of 59.25, 59.83 and 59.88, respectively.
Senior Kyle Hawley will join Reierson in the final heat of the men's 100 fly tonight. Hawley completed the event in a time of 51.67 and earned eighth place.
Junior Jill Cooke recorded the highest finish on the women's side as she came in third overall in the women's 200 free. Cooke touched the wall in a time of 1:54.20. Junior Dana Hunter just missed the consolation heat and finished in 17th place with a time of 1:57.07.
The men's team will return two in the consolation heat of the 200 free. Freshman Pat McGrath established a personal best time of 1:43.35 and finished 11th overall. Sophomore Matt Krouse will join the freshman as he finished 15th with a time of 1:44.21.
In the women's 100 breast, junior Krystel Kooyman and freshman Addie Ellspermann placed 10th and 13th, respectively. Kooyman posted a time of 1:06.69, while Ellspermann set a new career high by almost two seconds with a time of 1:07.99.
Joining Marcus in the men's 100 breast finals heat will be XU's Joe Conklin. Conklin finished in 8th place and earned a time of 58.81. Senior Dan Milheim and sophomore Brian Stromberg will compete in the consolation heat of the event. Milheim touched the wall with a time of 58.85, while Stromberg notched a 59.52 to establish a new career high by over three seconds.
Xavier will finish the evening with four swimmers in the women's 100 back as freshman Mary Catherine Mahon took seventh with a time of 59.42 and will return in the finals heat this evening. Three Musketeers will return in the consolation heat as sophomore Mary Kuhnen finished 10th (59.97), freshman Audrey Wilkerson finished 13th (1:00.66) and senior Natalie Lindquist finished 16th (1:01.31).
The finals of Day 3 of the 2006 Atlantic 10 Swimming Championships will get underway tonight at 6:30 pm. Both of Xavier's teams enter the evening in fourth place overall with the men's team currently second in swimming and the women's team is third in swimming.
