DAVIDSON, N.C. - After posting eight runs in the first inning, the Xavier Musketeers finally ended its four-game skid and defeated Davidson in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon 12-9 at Wilson Field. The top three hitters in the Xavier lineup each recorded three hits and XU is now 3-0 in games when scoring 10 or more runs in a game. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 3-6 on the season, while Davidson has now lost two in a row and falls to 5-3 overall.
Adam Pasono continued to carry a hot bat as the freshman sent the second pitch of the game over the left field wall for his first career home run and RBI. The Musketeers would follow by sending 13 batters to the plate in the opening stanza and after the dust settled, XU posted eight runs and eight hits on the scoreboard to take the quick 8-0 lead after the top half. Pasono would record two of his three hits on the game in the first inning.
After collecting eight hits in the first, Xavier was held to just two hits over the next five innings by three Wildcat pitchers. Then with one out in the seventh, Dan Hayden got the Musketeers going with a one-out double and went to third on a Chris Lozan single. Lipski then sent a 1-1 offering deep over the center-field fence for a three-run homer, his first of the year, and an 11-7 Musketeer lead.
Lipski finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with a two-run double, two runs, a career-high five RBIs and what figured to be the game-winning home run in the seventh. Pasono ended the contest 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored. The other two Musketeers to record three hits were Jordan Wolf, who finished 3-for-5 on the day with two RBIs, and Sean Brewer who was 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Juniors Dan Hayden and Lozan each finished 2-for-4 on the game and rounded out the XU players with two or more hits in the contest.
XU's Dan Graham (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season, hurling five innings and allowing 10 hits, five runs, three earned, with two walks and two strikeouts. Michael Lucas picked up the first save of his career as the sophomore came in and slammed the door. Lucas pitched two innings of scoreless ball and only allowed two hits, while striking out two.
The Musketeers will take tomorrow off and then travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to get set for a three-game series with Gardner-Webb this weekend. XU will look to its usual weekend rotation in Mike Creevy, Bill Konecny and Michael Lucas to square off against the Bulldogs. GWU lost to North Carolina 11-8 this afternoon.
