OLEAN, N.Y. - Despite a homerun in the ninth inning by Dan Hayden, Xavier could not produce another last minute comeback and it was too little too late as St. Bonaventure earned the 6-3 victory in Atlantic 10 action on Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field. The homerun by Hayden was the only extra base hit for XU on the day and three errors proved costly in the loss. Xavier is now 13-32 on the season and 3-13 in A-10 play, while the Bonnies improve to 17-15 overall and 10-5 in conference action.
St. Bonaventure would score all six of its runs before Xavier finally crossed the plate in the top of the sixth. A fielding error by SBU would allow Steve Brown to move into scoring position before Sean Brewer singled to left to earn his team-leading 29th RBI and drive in Brown.
After holding the Bonnies scoreless for the last three innings, Hayden would blast his fourth homerun of the season over the fence in right center to drive in Chris Lozan and wrap up the scoring at 6-3.
Hayden finished the contest 2-for-4 with the homerun and two RBIs, while Lozan was also 2-for-4 in the game. Freshman Neil Lindgren also ended the contest 2-for-4 and did not earn a walk to improve his national ranking of walks per game, which currently places him 20th in the nation at 0.85 walks per game. Classmate Steve Brown extending his hitting streak to 10 games after a 1-for-4 day at the plate. Brown's streak is currently the second longest of the season for the Musketeers.
In his first Atlantic 10 start, freshman Charlie Leesman allowed one run on two hits, while striking out one in his two innings of work to pick up the loss. Classmate Brett Greenwell entered the game with two out in the bottom of the fourth and got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the score at 3-0 in favor of the Bonnies. Greenwell would finish out the game for the Musketeers allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and he struck out two in 4.1 total innings.
The two teams will return to the field tomorrow afternoon for game two of the three-game set. The first pitch is slated for 12:00 pm at McGraw-Jennings Field as Xavier's Mike Creevy takes the mound.
