Volleyball Continues A-10 Success with Win at La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Xavier volleyball team used a 3-0 sweep of the La Salle Explorers Friday night to remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Musketeers (15-6, 5-0 A-10) used a .311 hitting percentage to down the Explorers (9-12, 1-2 A-10) in three straight, 30-17, 30-20 and 30-21. XU was led by senior Jill Quayle and sophomore Hillary Otte who each posted 12 kills in the match.
Also for Xavier, sophomores Kelly Ruth and Lauren Kaminsky got under 10 digs apiece and freshman Claire Paszkiewicz set up 23 assists on the night.
Xavier jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead to open the match off of back-to-back kills from senior Jenni Horvath. The lead was cut to two, 11-9, but XU would break the game open with an 8-0 run. Freshman Katie Russell put an exclamation point on the frame with her game-winning kill. The Musketeers took the first game, 30-17.
The second game started out the same with Xavier jumping ahead 7-1 early. Xavier stretched the lead to nine, 14-5, on the strength of another kill from Russell. The Explorers pulled within five, 20-15, but XU finished the frame with a 10-5 run. The Musketeers took game two, 30-20.
XU headed into the third game with a two-game lead but the Explorers were not going down without a fight. La Salle took a 3-1 lead before Xavier fought back to tie the match at three apiece. The frame remained close until the Musketeers used a 6-2 run to take a seven point lead, 26-19. Two kills from Quayle and one from Otte closed the game with Xavier on top, 30-21, as the Musketeers swept the Explorers three games to one.
La Salle was lead by Jackie Kushman with 12 digs and Rachel Stemper with nine kills.
