RIO VERDE, Ariz. - The Xavier University women's golf team stands tied for ninth place with Cincinnati after the first round of play at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational hosted at the 6,277 yard Quail Run Golf Course.
While tied for ninth, the Musketeers stand only eight strokes back from second place after their first day team total of 306 (+18). An XU surge could rocket the Musketeers into a top-five finish.
Baylor currently leads the field of 18 with an impressive one-over par first day total. Baylor is led by the current individual leader Allison Martin, who shot a three-under first round.
In only her second tournament of the year, senior Kathleen Hardy continues her stellar comeback performance last week at the Campbell Spring Classic with a team-leading first round score of two-over. Hardy currently stands tied for eleventh.
Just as XU is boosted by the return of Hardy, the Musketeers lose another talent in sophomore Lindsay Cornell to shoulder problems. Fortunately the injury does not have season-ending implications, as Cornell hopes to rejoin the team by the William & Mary Invitational in two weeks.
Two shots back from Hardy, senior Kara Manis carded a 76 to finish the day tied for 25th. Manis is followed closely by junior Diana Torry who sits a stroke back at 77 (+5). Freshman Mary Beth McKenna added her score of seven-over to finish the day tied in 60th place. A stroke back from her stands freshman Lindsay Steiner, posting an eight-over par round to land her in a tie for 70th. Junior Erin Gore, in her first tournament of the spring season, carded a nine-over par 81.
Second round action gets underway with an
