Xavier Drops Deciding Game Three to Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - In the decisive game of the series, Xavier could not overcome another tough offensive day by Western Carolina and lost the series along with the final game, 14-7. The Musketeers pounded out seven runs on six hits but had three costly errors that led to three unearned runs for WCU on the afternoon. Xavier now stands at 2-14 overall, while Western Carolina improves to 9-6 on the season.
Senior Jordan Wolf continued to play at a high level as he finished 3-for-4 on the day to claim team-high honors at the plate. He scored two of XU's seven runs and drove in one, while belting his third homerun of the season. Classmate Drew Roberts saw his first action of the season due to injury but made the most of his three at-bats with a grand slam to left center to score four of Xavier's six runs in the top of the fifth. Neil Lindgren recorded the last extra base hit for the Blue and White as he roped a double in the fifth before the Roberts homerun.
Junior Kyle Cowden took the loss on the mound and now stands at 0-2 on the season. The righty went 4.2 innings and allowed nine runs, six earned, on seven hits with five walk to only one strikeout. David Hartman again came in relief to throw 2.1 scoreless innings and now has allowed only one earned in 6.1 innings on the season.
As XU gets set to make its home debut on Tuesday, the statistical leaders after 16 straight games away from home are currently seniors. Wolf leads the offensive side of things with a team-high .397 average with 23 hits, three homeruns and 12 RBIs to go along with a perfect 6-for-6 stolen base attempts. Senior Adam Lipski leads the team in doubles with four, while freshman Drew Schmidt has taken a team-high seven walks through 16 games played.
On the mound, Hartman is leading in ERA with a stingy 1.42 average and a team-low .280 average against. Junior Michael Lucas has thrown a team-high 21.2 innings, while also leading the team in strikeouts with 14.
After a 16-game road trip to open the season, Xavier will return to Hayden Field for the 2007 home opener against Bowling Green on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
