COLUMBUS - In the first meeting between the two teams since the 2000 season, Xavier rallied in the top of the ninth to get past Ohio State, 4-3, at Bill David Stadium on a cool Wednesday night. Freshman Bobby Freking provided the RBI-single that tied the game before Jordan Wolf sent a shot to center to give XU the lead for good. With the win, the Musketeers evened their record at 21-21 and are now winners of 17 of their last 20 games. The loss drops the Buckeyes to 23-11 on the season.
With a looming 3-1 lead entering the top of the ninth, back to back singles gave the Musketeers the 4-3 lead as pinch hitter Bobby Freking sent a shot down the first baseline to tie the score and Jordan Wolf roped a single to center to give Xavier the lead for good. Neil Lindgren started the rally with a one-out walk and Sean Farrell drew a pinch-hit walk before a single by Matt Waskerwitz singled to load the bases. Adam Pasono then sent a shot down the third baseline that was snagged by the Buckeye third baseman as he tagged the bag but could not convert the double play keeping the XU inning alive for Freking's heroics.
Chris Lozan roped a two-out double into left center to get the Musketeers on the board and pick up his first RBI of the season. Pat Coffey picked up the one-out single to give XU its first base runner of the day. Coffey came in all the way from first to score and give Xavier the early 1-0 lead.
Ohio State responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the first. Matt Angle set the table with the one-out single before scoring on a double from Eric Fryer. Fryer would beat out the throw from left fielder Pat Coffey after J.B. Shuck sent a single through the left side to give OSU the 2-1 lead after one complete.
Both pitching staffs would bear down and hold each team to just six hits over the next seven innings after both teams combined for five hits in the first. That was until the Buckeyes welcomed new XU pitcher Brett Greenwell in the bottom of the eighth. After inducing the leadoff batter to ground out to short, OSU rattled off three straight hits to plate another run and extend the lead to 3-1 after eight complete.
Lozan led the way offensively as the senior ended with a 2-for-4 day with XU's first RBI. Waskerwitz also had a two-hit evening, finishing 2-for-4 as well. Adam Pasono and Coffey had the other two Xavier hits with Coffey scoring a run.
Freshman Zac Richard had a solid outing throwing 4.0 innings allowing only two runs on six hits. The rookie gave way to Kyle Cowden who threw three shutout innings giving up a hit. Greenwell picked up his first win of the season after allowing one run on three hits. David Hartman picked up his third save of the year as he threw a three-up, three-down ninth.
Xavier will hit the road again this weekend for its final Atlantic 10 road trip of the season. The Blue and White will travel to Rhode Island (10-23, 7-8 A-10) to take on the Rams. Getting the start in the opener will be senior Bill Konecny (3-3, 3.14 ERA) with Charlie Leesman (4-2, 4.35 ERA) going game two and Michael Lucas (2-5, 5.75 ERA) wrapping up the series. Game times for this weekend will be a 3:00 pm start on Friday afternoon, while Saturday and Sunday will get underway at 12:00 pm.
