KINGSTON, R.I. - For the first time since March 18, Xavier lost two straight games as the Musketeers fell to host Rhode Island in the last Atlantic 10 road trip of the season. In game one it was four errors that cost XU the ball game, 7-4, while seven strikeouts and seven runners left on base did not help as the Blue and White fell in game two, 3-1. The Musketeers are now 21-23 overall and drop to 12-5 in the A-10, while Rhode Island improves to 14-24 on the season and 9-8 in conference action.
Robbie Kelley led the way offensively for the Musketeers as the junior finished 4-for-8 on the afternoon with XU's only extra-base hit, a double in the second game. Adam Lipski finished 3-for-7, while Adam Pasono and Sean Farrell also had three hits on the afternoon. Freshman Pat Coffey led the team with two RBIs and Neil Lindgren had the only other RBI for Xavier.
Senior Bill Konecny took the opening game loss after throwing 5.2 innings of seven hit baseball. Konecny allowed five runs but only two were earned and struck out two before giving way to Mark Janszen. Janszen went the final 2.1 innings of the first game and allowed two earned on three hits with three strikeouts.
Sophomore Charlie Leesman threw a great game two but could not get the win. Leesman went 7.0 innings and allowed only one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts. He would hand off the ball to freshman Zac Richard who would be roughed up for two runs on two hits in just one inning as he took the loss in the second game.
Xavier lost two straight games for the first time since March 17 and 18 when the Musketeers were downed at Louisville in the final two games of the series. XU has now won 17 of the last 22 games played.
Xavier will take on the Rams in the final game of the series tomorrow at 12:00 pm. XU will be looking to avoid its first sweep since being downed by Louisville 3-0 on March 18. Michael Lucas (2-5, 5.75 ERA) will get the start on the hill and wrap up the series.
