Men's Tennis Falls to Toledo, 5-2

CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's tennis team dropped its season opener, 5-2, to visiting Toledo Saturday afternoon at the Mercy Healthplex Fairfield. The Musketeers picked up wins at the three and six spot in singles while winning one of the three doubles contests. XU is not 0-1 while UT improved to 1-0.

"For this to be our first match, I felt the guys gave a good effort against a quality team," said head coach Eric Toth. "They need to play better in clutch situations but I am confident we will improve and their hard work will pay off later."

Junior Ra'ees Ismail downed Toledo's Sven Burus in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, at the No. 3-spot in singles action. Senior Brian Schubert scored the Musketeers other point by defeating the Rockets' Wade Ward at the No. 6 position, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, Ismail teamed up with sophomore J.T. Torbeck to get past Toledo's twin duo of Jared and Jeremy Miller, 9-8 (6).

Xavier will be back in action tomorrow as it plays host to IPFW Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Five Seasons in Cincinnati. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
