CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team fell to visiting Dayton in straight sets, 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 22-25), Thursday night at Cintas Center. Junior Kelly Ruth led the Musketeers with her 12th double-double of the season as she posted a team-high 13 kills and a match-high 14 digs.
Also for the Musketeers, senior Jenn Welsh and sophomore Claire Paszkiewicz evenly shared setting duty as they both recorded 17 assists in the contest. Junior Hillary Otte tallied eight kills on the night with Ruth added three assisted blocks as well.
Xavier (14-10, 7-2 A-10) fell behind early in the first set as Dayton (17-8, 8-1 A-10) took the 8-4 lead after an XU attack error. The Musketeers used a 5-0 run to take the 16-15 advantage but the Flyers rallied and retook the lead for good at 19-18. Holding set-point at 24-22, a Xavier attack error sealed the game for Dayton as UD went up one set to none.
In the second set, XU was the one to go up quickly as it got ahead 6-1. The Musketeers went up by as many as six before the Flyers battled back to knot the frame at 19 each. Xavier scored three straight to hold the 22-19 lead but Dayton wasn't giving up. The score was 23-23 when back-to-back UD kills gave the Flyers the set, 25-23, and a two-set lead.
Dayton never trailed in the third set and the score was never tied. Xavier was within one at 7-6 after a kill from sophomore Shannon Voors but UD stretched its lead to five, 17-12. The Musketeers would pull the set to within one again at 22-21 and the Flyers were forced to call timeout. Out of the break, UD scored three of the last four points of the frame to take the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
The Flyers were led by Tiffany Gaerke with a match-high 17 kills and a team-high 13 digs. With the win, Dayton takes over sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10 West Division, behind only unbeaten No. 23 Saint Louis.
The Musketeers hit the road as they are set to square off against Rhode Island on Saturday, Nov. 1 in Kingston, R.I. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
