Volleyball Falls at Rhode Island, 3-0

KINGSTON, R.I. - After dropping the first set in extra points, the Xavier volleyball team could not recover, falling at Rhode Island in three sets, 3-0 (24-26, 20-25, 15-25). Junior Hillary Otte led the Musketeers with a match-high 12 kills in the losing effort.
Also for the Musketeers, junior Lauren Kaminsky was the only other XU player to reach double figure kills with 10 and senior Megan Hellmann tallied a match-high nine digs. Senior Jenn Welsh was the primary setter for the contest, recording 24 assists and freshman Kathryn Traut registered four assisted blocks.
Xavier (14-11, 7-3 A-10) posted more kills (42-37) and more digs (38-31) than its counterpart but Rhode Island (12-11, 4-5 A-10) made less errors and out-hit the Musketeers .292 to .250.
The first set was close throughout with the largest lead being three at 5-2 with URI ahead. Both teams battled back and forth but the Rams came out on top, 26-24. In the second set, Rhode Island went ahead early forcing Xavier to play catch up. A late XU rally came up short with URI taking the frame, 25-20. The final game was tight in the early going but The Rams took the lead for good at 12-11 and won the third set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0.
The Rams were led by Kayla Newberg with 11 kills and Peggy Doino with seven digs. Lauren McIntosh and Caitlyn Welsh both recorded two solo blocks while Lindsay Lytle got under 24 assists.
The Musketeers return to action on Nov. 7 when they head to Dayton to take on the Dayton Flyers. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
