LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Xavier baseball team fell, 12-1, at No. 2-ranked Kentucky Thursday at UK's Cliff Hagan Stadium. Junior right fielder Sean Farrell went 2-for-5 on the day to lead the Musketeer offense and junior center fielder Adam Pasono scored XU's lone run of the contest in the ninth inning.
Inclement weather in the Lexington area over the past two days forced a cancellation of Kentucky's orginally scheduled contest versus Morehead State on Tuesday. With Xavier having its mid-week games cancelled due to the same storm system, XU picked up the contest with UK on Thursday.
The Wildcats busted the game open with a seven-run fourth inning, beginning when Ryan Wilkes worked a one-out walk. Chris McClendon followed with a walk of his own and Howe followed, belting a 1-0 pitch to dead centerfield for his third homer of the year. Troy Frazier and Keenan Wiley singled with two out and Collin Cowgill cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line. After a quick pitching change, Brian Spear launched the second pitch he saw from XU reliever senior Kyle Cowden into right field for his first homer of the afternoon.
Xavier added a run in the top of the ninth with two out, as Pasono drew a walk and senior left fielder Andy Zellers singled up the middle. Farrell followed with an RBI single, just under the glove of UK's second baseman.
On the mound, Clint Tilford (2-0) got the win for the Wildcats. He finished the day, striking out three Musketeers in five innings of action.
The second arm out of the bullpen for Xavier, senior Mike Creevy (2-1) took the loss, allowing UK's first run in the second inning. Creevy was one of eight Musketeers to see action on the bump today, with only freshman Brian Muransky working more then one inning.
The Musketeers will open Atlantic 10 Conference play on Saturday, March 22, as they travel the short distance to Dayton. XU and UD will play a three-game series with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
