Baseball Drops 8-7 Decision to Miami

CINCINNATI - Although three Musketeers hit home runs Wednesday, it was not enough to hold off the Miami RedHawks as XU fell, 8-7, in a midweek contest at home. Senior Danny Hayden and juniors Jack Bonnikson and Jordan Conley all went yard for Xavier while Miami had two home runs in the game as well.
Conley was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead Xavier's offensive effort. Bonnikson also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Xavier (16-23) put up the first two runs of the game in the second inning after Conley was hit by a pitch which was followed by Bonnikson's homer to right field.
Miami (12-24) got a run back in the third from a solo shot by Ben Eubank. In the fourth, the RedHawks tallied three more runs to briefly take the lead, 4-2, as MU scored three runs on three hits.
XU retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Zac Richard singled and was followed by Conley's two-run homer to left field. Bonnikson got his second hit of the day with a single up the middle and then headed home on Hayden's long ball over the left center fence. Xavier held the 6-4 advantage heading into the fifth.
The RedHawks scored a run in the fifth to cut XU's lead to one, 6-5, but the Musketeers answered with a run of their own in the seventh. Junior Adam Pasono doubled to center field was moved to third on a fly out by Richard and then made it home on a double by Conley.
In the top of the eighth, Miami took control of the game by putting up three runs to regain the lead. Eubank's double scored two of the runs and Eubank came across on a double by Adam Eaton. The RedHawks held the 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the frame and that would prove to be the final score.
Senior David Hartman (0-2) took the loss for the Musketeers after striking out two while walking none and giving up one run. Starter freshman Brian Muransky tossed a career-high 7.0 innings with a career-high six strike outs in the no decision.
Bobby Oberschlake (3-3) got the win for the RedHawks as he struck out one while walking none in 1.1 innings of work. Steve Antoniotti got the save.
The Musketeers return to conference play this Friday as they welcome St. Bonaventure to Hayden Field for the first of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
