Baseball Splits A-10 Doubleheader at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. - The Xavier baseball team split its Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Fordham Saturday as the Musketeers lost the first game, 3-1, and then dominated the nightcap, 12-2. Sophomore Zac Richard led the Xavier offense, going 4-for-8 at the plate on the day.
Although Xavier (21-28, 15-8 A-10) collected eight hits in the first game, XU was only able to get one run across when freshman John McCambridge made it home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Drew Schmidt.
Fordham (27-22, 11-12 A-10) was able to score three runs off just five hits in the opener on Saturday, as Mike Mobbs led the way with a single and a double.
Junior Charlie Leesman (2-5) took the loss for the Musketeers in game one after striking out four batters but giving up two runs in three hits in 7.0 innings of work. Senior Mike Creevy tossed 1.0 inning of relief.
Tom Davis (8-2) got the win for the Rams as he struck out four batters and gave up one run in 7.1 innings of action.
The nightcap proved to be a different story as the tide turned in XU's favor in the nightcap. The Musketeers belted out 15 hits and were able to score 12 runs to take the second game, 12-2.
Six of Xavier's 12 runs were unearned due to Fordham's error ridden play. The Rams committed fours miscues over the fifth and sixth innings, allowing Xavier to go up, 11-1.
Junior Steve Brown was 3-for-5 in the second game with two runs scored and one RBI.
Senior Michael Lucas (5-2) got the win for XU as he struck out two batters, walked two and gave up two runs in 7.0 frames of action. Junior Joe Kohler threw 2.0 innings of relief for the Musketeers.
J.P. Mack (3-5) took the loss for Fordham in the nightcap after giving up six runs and striking out no Xavier batters in 4.1 innings of work.
The Musketeers and Rams will complete their three-game conference series on Sunday at the Rams' Houlihan Park. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
