LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Xavier men’s tennis junior Brian Starr and junior Philip Diaz will meet in the flight B consolation semifinals Sunday as Xavier finished the second day of competition at the Louisville Invitational Saturday at the University of Louisville.
"We really competed well today and put up some good results,” said XU coach Eric Toth. “Our doubles has come together this weekend and we still have chances tomorrow to capture some flight championships.”
Xavier freshman Brandon MacDonald moved on the flight A semifinals after defeating teammate senior Chris Herrlinger 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the flight quarterfinals. Senior Anthony Palmenter advanced to the flight B quarterfinals after defeating Western Kentucky’s Arul Selvan 6-2, 6-1. Palmenter then fell in the quarterfinals to Louisville’s Tim Barnoud 6-3, 6-4.
“Every player on the roster competed in singles the way I am used to seeing our kids compete,” said Toth. “MacDonald and Brennan Rooney are still alive in the main draws and will play for titles tomorrow. Their play today certainly merits them still being alive on Sunday. Bobby Deye, Herrlinger, and J.T. Torbeck also put up super efforts in singles today."
Rooney defeated Lipscomb’s Josh Cummings 6-3,6-0 to advance to the flight C semifinals. In doubles action the duo of Herrlinger and Bandy advanced to the flight A doubles competition. MacDonald and Richard Canelas also advanced to the flight B doubles semifinals.
Xavier will wrap up play in the Louisville Invitational tomorrow.
