OLEAN, N.Y. - With five runs in the third inning, the Xavier baseball team put Friday's Atlantic 10 conference game at St. Bonaventure out of reach as the Musketeers downed the Bonnies, 10-4. Five Musketeers tallied two hits on the day as XU out-hit SBU, 13-8.
The Musketeers were led by junior Bobby Freking who went 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and one run scored. Senior Adam Pasono also collected three RBI on the day while seniors Billy O'Conner and Steve Brown scored two runs apiece.
Xavier (16-12, 6-5 A-10) got up early on the Bonnies, scoring two runs in the first inning of the noon contest. Freking's two-out, two-RBI single to center plated both sophomore Ben Thomas and senior Neil Lindgren to give XU the 2-0 lead.
The Musketeers got another run in the second after sophomore John McCambridge took a base on balls and then added two more stolen bases to give him a team-high total of 20 on the season. With McCambridge on the hot corner, Pasono singled to bring him across the plate. Xavier led, 3-0, after one and a half.
St. Bonaventure (14-10, 4-6 A-10) struggled to get its offense going and Xavier took advantage as the Musketeers exploded in the third for five runs. With senior Jordan Conley on second after an extra base hit, Freking followed with a double of his own to allow Conley to cross. The Musketeers loaded up the bases and a fielder's choice from Pasono scored Freking followed by a two-out O'Conner single which plated Brown - Pasono would also score on the play on a costly error by the right fielder. After the top of the third, the Musketeers held a commanding 8-0 advantage.
The Bonnies finally got on the board in the fourth, notching three runs in the frame. SBU used four hits and a sacrifice fly to cut into XU's lead and after four complete innings, the Musketeers led, 8-3.
Scoring one run in both the sixth and ninth innings, Xavier kept the game out of reach as St. Bonaventure would muster only one more run. The Musketeers picked up the 10-4 win to even the A-10 series to one game apiece.
Junior Danny Rosenbaum (3-3) got the win for the Musketeers after tossing seven complete innings. He gave up four earned runs on eight hits and struck out six batters while walking only one. Sophomore Brian Muransky made his 14th appearance of the season out of the pen for one inning of relief and senior Jordan Conley moved onto the mound from short stop to close out the game for X.
Sebastian Bellito took the loss for the Bonnies. He put in three innings of work giving up six earned runs on seven hits and struck out none while walking three.
The Musketeers and Bonnies will close out their three-game series on Saturday at Fred Handler Park. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
