Baseball Drops 8-2 Decision at St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, N.Y. - The Xavier baseball team dropped its final game of a three-game series at St. Bonaventure, 8-2, Saturday afternoon as the Bonnies posted four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away from the Musketeers. With the loss, XU moves to 16-13 overall and 6-6 in Atlantic 10 play while SBU improves to 15-10 on the season and 5-6 in conference action.
For the Musketeers, sophomore Ben Thomas tallied two hits on the day while senior Adam Pasono went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Neither team scored through the first two innings and sophomore John McCambridge led off the third with a triple to right center, his first of the season, to put himself into scoring position. Pasono followed at the plate, reaching on an error by the short stop and McCambridge came home to put the Musketeers up one, 1-0.
St. Bonaventure would explode for four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, pulling away from Xavier and taking the 8-1 advantage into the seventh frame.
The Musketeers would get one run back in the eighth as Pasono blasted a lead-off solo home run to left center, scoring what would be the last run of the game. Xavier, unable to produce any more runs, took the 8-2 loss at SBU's Fred Handler Park.
Redshirt-freshman Nathan Mutsch (2-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after tossing 4.1 innings. He gave up four earned runs on four hits, striking out five batters while walking three. Freshman Josh Deeg and sophomore Brian Muranksy also saw time on the mound for XU.
Johnson (4-1) got the win for St. Bonaventure, in a complete-game five-hit outing for the Bonnies. He gave up one earned run on the day and struck out three while walking two.
The Musketeers will be participating in the inaugural Joe Nuxhall Classic in the coming week at the University of Cincinnati. Along with Xavier and host UC, Miami (Ohio) and Wright State will also take part in the classic. XU will face host Cincinnati on Tuesday, April 14, at Marge Schott Stadium. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
