CINCINNATI - After tying the game at five apiece with a two-run homer in the eighth, the Xavier baseball team took the visiting Dayton Flyers to 10 innings before falling to the Atlantic 10's first-place team, 8-5, at Hayden Field. Today's loss was only the fourth the Musketeers have suffered at home this season.
Sophomore John McCambridge banged out the game-tying two-run shot in the eighth, his third home run of the season, his only hit of the day with two RBI and a run scored. Senior Billy O'Conner was nearly perfect at the plate, going 4-of-5 and scoring a run.
Dayton (37-15, 21-4 A-10) went up early after notching three runs in the second inning. After a walk and a double put two men on for the Flyers, Jimmy Roesinger sent a dinger over the left field fence to score three for UD.
Xavier (31-18, 16-9 A-10) got two runs back in the next frame after O'Conner got on with a single and was moved over on a fielder's choice as junior Drew Schmidt reached first. Senior Neil Lindgren doubled in O'Conner for an RBI and sophomore Ben Thomas was put out at first, enabling Schmidt to make it home. After three, Dayton held the 3-2 lead.
The Musketeers tied the game in the fifth when Thomas collected his second RBI of the day as he reached on a fielder's choice and Schmidt came across home. The score would remained tied, 3-3, through the seventh inning.
In the top of the eighth, Dayton led off with a single and, with a man on, Marshall MacDonald went yard to score two for the Flyers the Musketeers answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run shot of their own as McCambridge brought in Steve Brown along with him.
Neither team would score in the ninth, so with the score knotted at five apiece, the two squads headed into the 10th. UD's Zach Jacob led off the frame with a solo shot to left center and a walk followed to give the Flyers a base runner. Aaron Dunsmore sealed the Flyers fate with a two-run homer to center field to give UD the 8-5 advantage, which proved to be the final margin.
Sean Finn (5-3) got the win for the Flyers after tossing 2.0 innings. He struck out two while walking one and allowed no runs on two hits.
Sophomore Tommy Shirley (1-4) took the loss for the Musketeers as he threw one frame. He gave up three runs on three hits and fanned two while walking two.
The Musketeers and Flyers will return to their series Friday, May 15, at Hayden Field for the second of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and admission is free.
