CINCINNATI - With a perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate, junior John McCambridge led Xavier baseball over visiting Cincinnati, 10-4, Tuesday evening at Hayden Field. With the win, XU improves to 15-27 while UC slips to 19-20 on the season.
McCambridge's five hits were the most for a Musketeer in one game since Jordan Wolf's five-hit game at Toledo on April 15, 2007. XU recorded three triples in the game as well, the first time the squad has accomplished that feat in at least the last seven seasons. Seniors Zac Richard and Neil Lindgren each added two hits on the day for XU, including Richard's first career triple. McCambridge, Lindgren, Richard and redshirt sophomore Matt Kleifges each scored two runs in the contest as well.
Xavier put up a single run in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Cincinnati battled back with a three-spot in the fourth to take over the advantage, 3-2.
The Musketeers came up big in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs - all with two outs on the board. Senior Bobby Freking was doubled in by Kleifges and Lindgren followed with a two-RBI single plating Richard and Kleifges, which proved to be the winning run. Freshman Patrick Paligraf collected an RBI when Lindgren made it home on his single to right field. After five complete, Xavier held a 6-3 lead.
The Bearcats got a run back in the seventh but XU put the game away in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on three hits. The Musketeer bullpen kept the Bearcats scoreless through the end of the game as XU claimed the 10-4 victory.
Freshman Markus Kuykendoll (2-4) was credited with the win for the Musketeers after throwing three innings of middle relief. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out three. Richard started the game for XU, tossing four innings and redshirt freshman Alex Vice and freshman Seth Willoughby each added an inning of scoreless relief.
Zach Isler (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Bearcats. He threw 4.2 innings giving up two earned runs, five total runs, while striking out two and walking two.
Cincinnati was led by Kevin Johnson and Braden Kline with two hits apiece and Jimmy Jacquot with two RBI.
The Musketeers will cross town tomorrow to take on the Bearcats again, this time at UC's Marge Schott Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
