Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match to George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Three Musketeers registered double-digit kills, yet it was not enough to take down the George Washington Colonials Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center. Xavier took the first two sets 30-28, 25-20 before George Washington came back and won the next three sets 25-21, 25-18, 15-8.
"We battled hard today," said head coach Mike Johnson. "All the credit to George Washington for the way they fought back. They got a ton of momentum going and made great plays down the stretch. We're looking forward to getting back in the gym so we can get to work."
Senior Michelle Matia and sophomore Kelsey Dunaway each tallied 13 kills while red-shirt sophomore Alex Smith received 11 kills. Matia's 13 kills is a season-best; she would finish with a .321 hitting percentage (13-4-28). The senior also had a whopping seven assisted blocks, another season-high. Smith also was in the blocking mix, helping knock down five blocks.
Freshman Aubree Smith recorded her first double-double of the season when she got 51 assists and 10 digs. The four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week contributed six kills and four assisted blocks. Junior Kaleigh Rougraff registered her first-career solo block while passing 17 digs. Classmate Stephanie Vorherr got under a team-best 20 digs while Kaela Jo Freppon aided in the passing game with 10 digs.
The loss drops XU to 13-6 on the season and 5-1 in Atlantic 10 action. GW improves to 13-6 on the season and 2-3 in conference action.
The Colonials were led by Lauren Whyte who tallied a match-high 22 kills while Katie Crosby assisted a match-best 52 times. Jamie Armstrong equaled Matia's efforts getting seven assisted blocks.
