Musketeers Fall in Five Sets to Rockets

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -The Xavier Musketeers lost a heartbreaker at the hands of the Toledo Rockets in five sets, 25-20, 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11 in its final match of the Michigan/adidas Invitational. Kaela Jo Freppon and Alex Smith led the attack for the Musketeers.
With the loss, Xavier falls to 7-5 on the season, while Toledo improves to 5-7.
Freppon led the match with 13 kills, a season best, while also getting under eight digs and assisting on two blocks. The junior also tied a season-best in service aces with three. Smith has a .296 hitting percentage (11-3-27), had two solo blocks and five assisted blocks, a tied for her career best.
Senior Michelle Matia collected a season-best five assisted blocks to go with her seven kills, two digs and two assists. Freshman Aubree Smith had a career-best five assisted blocks, a match-best 48 assists and six digs. Junior Kaleigh Rougraff had a season-best 21 digs, while freshman Kelly Westerkamp tallied her first collegiate kill.
The Rockets were led by Jordan Kielty who had 12 kills and Bethany Irwin who assisted on five blocks.
The Musketeers will host Wright State on Tuesday, September 20 in the first match of the season at Cintas Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for more information on Xavier volleyball.
