Sunday will mark the third match in series history between Xavier and Seton Hall, dating back to the Musketeers' inaugural season in the BIG EAST in 2013. The Musketeers hold a 1-0-1 record against the Pirates, including its first BIG EAST conference win against the Pirates in 2013 when Xavier took the 2-1 win at home. Then-freshman Ellie Eckerle scored and assisted on the game-winner for Taylor Dearbaugh to get the result. Last season, the Musketeers and Pirates played to a 0-0 draw through two overtimes.
Â
On Thursday night, the Musketeers put together a strong defensive performance to force overtime in Xavier's first BIG EAST road match at Marquette. Goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected eight saves and defenders Courtney Kobashigawa, Maria Libertin and Carly Alfano all played the entire 90 to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless for 90 minutes. In the second minute of extra time, a floater from MU slipped past Piccus to give Marquette the 1-0 win.
Samantha Dewey led the Musketeers on shots, including firing off three in quick succession midway through the second half to put pressure on the Golden Eagles. The first two shots of the season went wide of the goal and the third was the Musketeers' best opportunity of the second half, forcing the MU goalkeeper to make the stop to prevent the shot from scoring.
Â
The Pirates are also coming off an overtime loss on Thursday night, falling, 3-2, to Creighton at home in the 99th minute to move to 2-9-2 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play. SHU leading scorer Amanda Gulli put the Pirates ahead in the 11th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Creighton answered with a pair of goals before the halftime break, leading, 2-1, until the 86th minute.
Seton Hall's D'Yonna Riley scored the equalizer with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to force the extra period. The Pirates held the Bluejays scoreless for almost an entire period of overtime, but Creighton scored the game winner shortly before time expired to take the win.
Â
The match at Georgetown scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4 was postponed due to inclement weather. The game was rescheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14 at noon in Washington, D.C. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for more information.
