Musketeers earn road point after outshooting St. John’s in overtime

QUEENS, N.Y. – Xavier men's soccer outshot St. John's 3-1 in overtime, but couldn't find the game-winner as the two sides battled to a 0-0 draw at Belson Stadium on Wednesday.

It was the third overtime in four matches for the Musketeers, which moved to 7-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in BIG EAST play with the result. The Red Storm went to 3-7-3 and 1-1-2, as Xavier was held scoreless for just the third time this season.

Eight different players recorded shots for Xavier as Matt Vasquenza led the way with two. SJU goalkeeper Jordan Stagmiller had to make just one save, however, to keep the clean sheet.

XU keeper Dallas Jaye had another solid effort in goal, making three saves and posting his fifth shutout.

Both teams spent the opening 15 minutes of the match feeling each other out until the Red Storm earned the first pair of shots, both coming off corner kicks.

Xavier applied its burst at the tail end of the first, ripping off three attempts and earning two corners in the last eight minutes.

In the 37th minute, Vasquenza just missed wide off a takeaway in the box. Three minutes later, Majed Osman went just wide on another chance.

Todd Pratzner had the final quality look of the half, launching a header from about 10 yards in the 42nd – but it clanged off the top of the crossbar.

St. John's led 7-3 in shots in the second, but Jaye was up to task in goal – making three saves to keep the Red Storm off the board. XU had two of its three chances late, but Brown went wide in the 87th and Vasquenza was blocked in the final minute of regulation.

The Musketeers' best chances of the first overtime came sequentially as Walker Andriot was blocked in the 94th minute, setting up an Alex Ridsdale corner. Calum Latham had a chance off the service, but his header went high.

Matt Nance nearly found the back of the net in the 107th, lofting a ball toward the far post before Stagmiller knocked it over the crossbar. Offsides was called on the ensuing Musketeer corner, ending the threat.

For the match, St. John's outshot Xavier 10-9 and the Musketeer held a 7-3 edge in corners, but a goal eluded the team for a third straight match.

Xavier stays on the road, making a short trip over to Philadelphia to play Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 17. First touch is set for 3:00 p.m. ET.
