Flyers Top Musketeers in Five Sets

Sofia Peterson posted a career-high 17 kills in the loss
CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball dropped a five-set match (25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 25-27, 14-16) match to in-state rival Dayton on Wednesday night at Cintas Center.

The Musketeers move to 10-10 on the year, while the Flyers extend their win streak to 14 matches - improving to 16-6 on the year. XU has now dropped six straight to the Flyers.

Sofia Peterson led the Xavier offense with a career-high 17 kills. She added a team-high .406 hitting percentage to go along with five blocks. Abbey Bessler added a double-double, recording 15 kills and 16 digs.

Kristen Massa chipped in 15 kills and Makayla Agin added 12. Mackenzi Humm dished out a team-high 31 assists, while McKena Estes recorded 22.

Defensively, Dayton had one more block (11-10) than Xavier. Meredith Klare had a match-high 20 digs in the loss.

 Xavier captured the opening set, 25-18, behind a .345 hitting percentage - its highest percentage in the match. The Musketeers took a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 victory in set two. Defensively, Xavier limited the Flyers to a .077 hitting percentage in set one and a .000 percentage in set two.

Dayton came out of the break to post a .400 hitting percentage in set three, capturing the frame, 25-19. The third set featured nine ties and three lead changes before the Flyers pulled away by scoring seven of the final 10 points in the stanza.

The fourth set featured 11 ties and four lead changes with neither team leading by more than four points in the set. Tied at 25, Dayton took advantage of back-to-back errors to force a fifth set.

Xavier led 11-10 in set five before Dayton went on a 4-2 run to take a 14-13 advantage. Following a Bessler kill on the next play, Jill Loiars gave the Flyers a 15-14 lead on a kill. A Xavier attacking error ended the match, sealing the come-from-behind win for Dayton.

Amber Erhahon posted a match-high 18 kills and .615 hitting percentage for the Flyers. Jane Emmenecker also dished out a match-high 36 assists.

Xavier concludes its four-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 24 against Butler. First service is slated for 4 p.m.
