Swimming Heads to West Virginia for Big 12 vs. BIG EAST Weekend

Musketeers face off with host WVU as well as BIG EAST Foes Seton Hall, Butler
CINCINNATI – Xavier swimming heads east this weekend to face off in West Virginia University's Big 12 vs. BIG EAST Weekend. The meet will feature the host Mountaineers, as well as BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall, as well as Butler on the women's side. Events are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the WVU Natatorium and continue on Saturday with events beginning at 10:00 a.m. Results will be available on GoXavier.com.
Xavier is coming off a pair of meets at local rivals last weekend. The Musketeer women picked up a win against Cleveland State (184-109), while falling to UC (236-63) and Miami (144-96). Xavier collected a number of top three finishes and several Musketeers moved up in the XU records with new personal bests.
West Virginia is coming off its BIG 12 vs. ACC Weekend, where the Mountaineers faced off with Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. On Friday, WVU grabbed a 133-110 win over the Yellow Jackets after taking the top spot in seven events. The next day the Hokies topped the Mountaineers, 173.5-118.5, picking up four first place finishes.
On the BIG EAST side of the competition, Seton Hall will be competing, giving the Musketeers a preview of a BIG EAST competitor. Seton Hall opened its season last weekend by hosting Saint Peter's and Montclair State, picking up a pair of decisive wins and 14 first place finishes.
Butler will also compete at WVU on the women's side. This is the second time the Xavier women will face off with the Bulldogs, after opening the season at the Butler Quad Meet. In that meet, the only outside competition of Butler's season so far, the Bulldogs finished with a win over Evansville, 119-104, but fell to Saint Louis and Wright State, as well as the Musketeers who came away from the event with four victories.
The Xavier men competed at a pair of local rivals last weekend, traveling across town to UC to face the Bearcats, as well as Cleveland State on Friday, before heading up to Miami on Saturday. The Xavier men fell to all three opponents, but collected a number of impressive performances, including first place finishes from Rodrigo Suriano and Luke Johanns, who was named BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the week for his efforts.
The host Mountaineers were last in action during WVU's Big 12 vs. ACC Weekend on the men's side. West Virginia opened last weekend against Georgia Tech, falling short of the Yellow Jackets, 135-108, but collected five first place finishes in the meet. On Saturday, the WVU men were narrowly edged by the Hokies, 155-145, taking first in nine of the 16 events.
Seton Hall will also compete on the men's side, giving the two-time defending BIG EAST Champions a first look at its conference competition. The Pirates opened the season last weekend by picking up a pair of convincing wins against Saint Peter's and Montclair State at home. SHU earned 26 top three finishes through 16 events.
