FRANKFORT, Ky. – Former Musketeer men's basketball standout Darnell Williams ('00) was officially introduced as head men's basketball coach at Kentucky State, a Division II program in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, on Monday morning.
Williams has served as an assistant coach for the Thorobreds since the 2012-13 season, guiding the team to winning seasons in two of his three years on staff.Â
Williams joined the staff at Kentucky State after several years of coaching experience in the Cincinnati Public School System and on the AAU circuit. He also received a master's degree in sports management from Columbia Southern University in 2009, and he and his wife Brigitte reside in Frankfort, Ky. with their daughter Dorien, son Cameron, and grandson Cameron Jr.
AS A MUSKETEER:
• Played shooting guard and small forward from 1995-2000, scoring 1,572 points – a mark that still ranks 15th at XU.
• Holds the school record for points in a game by a freshman, which came in a 35-point outburst against Duquesne on Feb. 24, 1996.
• Led Xavier in scoring during his junior season (1997-98) with 17.3 points per game.
• Named to Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team in 1996 after averaging 12.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 0.9 apg as a freshman.
• Named to Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team in 1998 after helping the Musketeers to the title, 77-63, against George Washington. Four of the five players on the roster came from Xavier: Torraye Braggs, Lenny Brown, James Posey and Williams.
• Williams is the only Xavier player to have been on teams that defeated a No. 1-ranked UC team on two separate occasions.
• Graduated with a bachelor's in communication arts in 2000.
