Musketeers Drop Sunday Matinee With DePaul

CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball dropped an 87-63 contest with DePaul on Sunday afternoon in BIG EAST action.
Turnovers proved costly for the Musketeers (14-10, 6-7 BIG EAST) as the Blue Demons (19-6, 11-2 BIG EAST) converted 29 turnovers into 42 points.
DePaul led 9-2 in the opening minutes of the contest before a 5-0 run capped by a Briana Glover basket got Xavier within two, 9-7, at the 13:49 mark. The Blue Demons used a 26-6 run to make the score 35-13 with 5:57 on the clock. XU scored eight unanswered before DePaul ended the period on a 12-5 to make the score 47-26 at the break.
Raeshaun Gaffney led the Musketeers at halftime with seven points, while Glover added six on 3-of-3 shooting. Brittany Hrynko led DePaul with 27 points at the break. XU held a 19-18 advantage on the glass with Glover leading the Musketeers with three rebounds.
Xavier hit 65 percent of its shot attempts (13-of-20) in the second half, but could not overcome the first-half deficit. DePaul outscored XU, 40-37, in the second stanza behind eight of its 11 three pointers on the day.
Maleeka Kynard scored a team-high 15 points for XU on 4-of-9 shooting with three 3-pointers. Both Jenna Crittendon and Glover added 10 points, while Leah Schaefer dished out a team-high four assists.
Xavier finished the day hitting 50 percent of its shot attempts and went 6-of-13 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 9-of-11 from the foul line, paced by Kynard who was 4-of-4. The senior guard has now made 15 consecutive free throws.
Hrynko led DePaul with a game-high 32 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including eight three pointers. Chanise Jenkins added 12 points and a game-high 10 assists.
DePaul won the battle on the glass, 42-33, led by Brandi Harvey-Carr who had eight rebounds. Glover led XU with seven rebounds, while Anniina Äijänen pulled down six.
The Musketeers return to action at Georgetown on Friday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m.
