BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Xavier women's soccer grabbed a 2-0 victory over Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky. on Friday afternoon. The exhibition match against the Hilltoppers served as a final tune-up before the Musketeers being the regular season next week.
"Great result today on the road for our first game of the year," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood after the match. "We saw a lot of good performances and some quality soccer. We look forward to opening the season at Evansville next Friday night."
After 30 scoreless minutes for both squads, the Xavier offensive picked up its attack. After three shots in quick succession put the Hilltopper defense on its heels, sophomore Addie Englehart sailed the ball over the WKU goalkeeper's head from 25 yards out to find the upper right corner of the net, giving the Musketeers the 1-0 lead.
Xavier finished the first half with eight shots while holding Western Kentucky to just two shots in the period, both failing to find the net, to give the Musketeers the 1-0 lead at the break.
The Hilltopper offensive attack intensified in the second half, doubling its shot output from the first half in the first 15 minutes of the period. After holding a shut-out for 50 minutes, junio goalkeeper Rachel Piccus was replaced in goal by freshman Libby Grace. Grace, playing in her first collegiate game, collected two saves in 15 minutes before Piccus returned to the game at the 64 minute mark.
Shortly after Piccus returned, the Musketeer offense struck again. A shot toward the far post from freshman Kylie Hohlt deflected off the WKU goalkeeper. Of the rebound, junior Tori Doss, Xavier's leading scorer in 2014, punched the ball in to give XU the 2-0 lead with 23 minutes remaining in the match.
Xavier continued to attack offensively, finishing with seven shots in the second half, to bring the game total to 15 while holding WKU to seven shots, with two corner kicks for each squad. Nine different Musketeers attempted shots, led by Englehart's three shots, including two on-goal.
Musketeers will head to Evansville, Ind. on Friday, Aug. 21 to take on the Purple Aces at 7:00 p.m. in the first match of the regular season. Xavier will remain in the Hoosier state to close out its opening weekend, taking on Purdue in West Lafayette at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
