Tierney’s First Xavier Goal Gives Musketeers 3-2 Overtime Win
08.21.15 | Women's Soccer
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After the Xavier women's soccer team erased a 2-0 halftime deficit to force overtime, sophomore Maddie Tierney knocked in the first goal of her college career to secure a 3-2 win at Evansville on Friday night. The season opening win gives the Musketeers a 1-0-0 record as they head to Purdue on Sunday.
The Purple Aces (0-1-0) struck early, taking the 1-0 lead at the 14 minute mark after UE's Bronwyn Boswell gained control of a loose ball in the box and sailed it into the upper left corner. Evansville extended its lead to two in the first half when Evansville's Sara Osinski scored off a pass from midfield.
"To be down 2-0 at halftime on the road to the preseason Missouri Valley favorite and come back and win the game is a great accomplishment for our program," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "We actually told the team at halftime, even down 2-0, we're playing great and we thought we were going to win the game."
The Musketeer offense attacked quickly in the second half. At the 48:29 mark, sophomore Kenadie Carlson found the lower right corner of the net off an inside feed from junior Tori Doss to cut the lead to 2-1.
Less than 30 second later, another Doss pass set up senior Catherine Allon, who blasted the ball over the top of the goalkeeper from 15 yards out to bring the game into a 2-2 tie.
Both teams battled for the remainder of the second half for the go-ahead goal, with Xavier taking 10 second-half shots to Evansville's nine, but neither was able to find the back of the net, forcing overtime.
In the third minute of extra time, Tierney found the ball off a blocked shot from freshman Andie Kennard. Tierney sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Musketeers the sudden-death win, 3-2, in the 93rd minute of the match.
Xavier finished with 16 shots, led by four from freshman Samantha Dewey. Junior Rachel Piccus collected six saves and the win.
"Unfortunately we made two big mistakes in the first half that put us down 2-0," said Sherwood. "It took great fortitude from our team to come out and get a couple quick goals and then the last in the overtime to get the game winner. We're looking forward to a big challenge Sunday at Purdue."
The Musketeers continue opening weekend in the Hoosier State, traveling to West Lafayette, Ind. to take on the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and audio feed will be available at no cost, and paid stream will be available through the BTN2Go application.
