Doss Scores Twice in Second Period but Xavier Falls in Final Minutes at Purdue
08.23.15 | Women's Soccer
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –  Junior Tori Doss scored twice in the second half to give the Musketeers a lead late into the match, but two late goals from Boilermakers handed Xavier women's soccer its first loss of the season, falling, 4-3, at Purdue (2-0-0) on Sunday afternoon.
After battling back from a 2-0 deficit to take an overtime win at Evansville on Friday, the Musketeers (1-1-0) found themselves in a similar position in West Lafayette. Xavier fell behind early when Purdue's Hannah Leinert stole a goal kick and scored inside the left post to put the Boilermarkers up, 1-0, 15 minutes into the match. Less than five minutes later, PU's Maddy Williams scored off a corner kick to put Xavier down, 2-0.
As they did on Friday night, the Musketeers found a way to battle out of the early deficit. With less than three minutes remaining before halftime, the Xavier offense struck to cut the lead in half. After a foul on Purdue, freshman Samantha Dewey scored on a penalty kick to send the Musketeers into the locker room down only a goal, 2-1. The goal marked the first of Dewey's Xavier career.
Xavier opened the second half attacking on offense, as it did against Evansville. Tori Doss, the leading scorer from 2014, flicked the ball past the goal keeper a minute into the second period to tie the game up at 2-2.
Doss struck again at the 60 minute mark, scoring her second goal of the game off a pass from Dewey inside the left post from 18 yards out.
Xavier held the 3-2 lead up until the final five minutes of the game, when Purdue's Williams struck again, tying the game up at 3-all. A header from the Boilermakers' Nicole Robertson with two minutes remaining put PU ahead, 4-3.
In the final minute of the game, Courtney Kobashigawa had a good look for the equalizer, but the shot went wide-right, ending the game with Purdue on top, 4-3.
"We played them really close. Give credit to Purdue, they were definitely the better team on the day," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "We came out in the first 15 minutes and you could see we just didn't have any legs left from our battle on Friday night. That said, I've never seen a team respond like we did, going down two to Purdue and coming back and getting three goals, putting us in position, with five minutes to go, to win the game."
Doss' two goals on two shots led the Musketeers and Dewey finished with three points on a goal and an assist. In the opening weekend, the Xavier offense produced six goals created by five different Musketeers.Â
"There's some really positive takeaways for how we responded, even fatigued, and creating six goals in our first two games against two very good opponents is a great sign for this season."
The Musketeers return to action on Friday when Xavier hosts Toledo for the first game of the season home-opening double header. The Xavier women play at 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by the Xavier men, who take on Eastern Illinois at 8:00 p.m.
