
Women's Soccer Hosts Toledo in Home Opener

CINCINNATI - After opening the season with a trip to the Hoosier State, the Xavier women's soccer (1-1-0) team returns to the friendly confines of the XU Soccer Complex on Friday, Aug. 27 to host Toledo at 5:00 p.m. Live stats and live streaming video will be available from GoXavier.com
The Musketeers are coming off an opening weekend where they faced off against MVC favorite Evansville and Big Ten foe Purdue. In each match, the Musketeers found themselves in a 2-0 hole before ripping off three straight goals. Against Evansville, the third and final goal came in the third minute of overtime, giving Xavier the 3-2 win to open the season. In the match against Purdue, XU took a 3-2 lead into the final 10 minute of the match, but an offensive outburst from the Boilermakers sent the Musketeers home with a 4-3 loss.
Toledo (1-1-0) is coming off a 3-0 loss at No. 9 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish took an early lead on the Rockets, going up 2-0 in the first 20 minutes of the match, adding a third score late in the second period. The Rockets opened the season with a 3-2 win in double-overtime at Detroit, with Isa Echeverri scoring her second goal of the game early in the second period of extra time to notch the win. Sophie Pohl also scored for the Rockets.
SERIES HISTORY
The Musketeers are 1-2 against Toledo all time, with the series dating back to 1996 when Xavier defeated the Rockets, 1-0, at home. The most recent matchup came last season when XU traveled up I-75 during the non-conference and fell, 1-0, after Isabella Echeverri scored in the 65th minute.
ROOKIE HONORS
Newcomer Samantha Dewey collected Rookie of the Week honors from the BIG EAST Conference for the week of Aug. 24 thanks to her offensive performance in the first two games of the season. After the Musketeers found themselves in a 2-0 deficit at Purdue, Dewey knocked in the first goal of her college career shortly before the half to move Xavier within striking distance. After the Musketeers tied the game at 2-2, Dewey fed the ball to Tori Doss to put Xavier ahead, 3-2, against the Boilermakers. Dewey also assisted sophomore Kenadie Carlson's goal in the 3-2 win at Evansville.
DOSS CONTINUES TO COLLECT ACCOLADES
Junior Tori Doss took home her second career nomination to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after posting a team-high two goals during the first two games of the season. After starting the second half with a 2-1 deficit at Purdue, Doss struck less than five minutes into the second half to tie the score up, 2-2. Doss' second goal of the season came minutes later to give Xavier the 3-2 lead on the Boilermakers. Â Doss also dished out two assists in the 3-2 win at Evansville to total six points on the weekend. She was previously honored the week of Sept. 8, 2014. Doss also previously earned Rookie of the Week honors from the BIG EAST during the 2013 season.
OFFENSIVE ATTACK ON THE RISE
During the season-opening road trip through the Hoosier State, the Musketeer offense posted six goals in two games against Evansville and Purdue. This two-game offensive output equals 60 percent of the total goals-scored for the entire 2014 season (10). The six goals were scored by five different Musketeers, including two in the second half against Purdue from 2014 leading scorer Tori Doss to give Xavier the late lead.
TIERNEY ENTERS THE SCORING COLUMN
After posting two goals in the second half against Evansville to tie the game up, 2-2, with the Purple Aces, the Musketeers held the draw for the remainder of regulation to force overtime. In the 93rd minute of the match, sophomore Maddie Tierney found the ball off a blocked shot from freshman Andie Kennard and knocked it into the bottom left corner of the net, giving the Musketeers the 3-2 win and Tierney the first goal of her college career.Â
