Musketeers tie mark for second-most goals in program history in home opener
CINCINNATI – No. 19 men's soccer buried visiting Eastern Illinois, 8-0, to open the season on Friday at Xavier Soccer Complex.
Matt Vasquenza scored twice within five minutes as a 1-0 halftime lead snowballed quickly after the break. By the end of the match, XU had tied a mark for the second-most goals scored in a match in program history. The all-time mark was set in a 13-0 win over Morehead State on October 6, 1984.
Vasquenza's two goals led the Musketeers, while Alex Ridsdale, Majed Osman, Eric McWoods, Calum Latham and Kaleb Bayse also contributed goals. XU held a 20-2 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corners.
XU took the lead in the 16 minute, as Alex Ridsdale dispossessed an EIU defender just outside the box. The senior then beat his man and shook the goalie, leaping over top before finishing to the right post.
Vasquenza made it 2-0 early in the second half, capitalizing on a quick recovery by Kyle Martin, who served the ball to the left side of the box. Vasquenza was there to finish the ball, beating EIU's keeper to the right post in the 52nd minute.
Less than five minutes later, Vasquenza curled one inside the left post from about 20 yards off a pass from Josh Grant.
Majed Osman got into the action in the 66th minute, receiving a centering pass from Eric McWoods and finishing left post. McWoods scored himself 1:15 later, stealing a ball from an EIU defender and finishing from the right side.
Calum Latham made it 6-0 in the 72nd minute, gaining possession of a rebound inside five yards and beating the keeper right post.
Kaleb Bayse finished off the scoring with a pair of goals, the first coming in the 74th minute off a cross from Osman at the eight yard mark. Bayse then found the net again in the 76th minute, connecting from point blank range off a rebound.
Xavier returns to the pitch on Sunday, August 30 playing at Wisconsin. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
