Kenadie Carlson Leads Women's Soccer to 2-0 Win Over IUPUI
09.11.15 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI - Kenadie Carlson's fourth goal of the season is her first game-winner of 2015, as the Musketeers topped IUPUI, 2-0, on Friday night at XU Soccer Complex. The Musketeers posted a second-straight shutout as they moved to 4-2 on the season.
After the Musketeers and the Jaguars (2-3-1) played to a 0-0 tie in the first half, Carlson broke the draw less than 10 minutes into the second period after senior Catherine Allon played the ball to her inside the box. Carlson finished giving the Musketeers the only goal they would need for the win.Â
"Carlson's best game of the year last season was this game. She's a kid from Indiana and she really gets up for this match up," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "When she's running at you with speed with the ball at her feet she's a handful. I think she found some of those moments, for sure, tonight and was probably unlucky to not get a second or third."
Â
Carlson also collected a third point on the evening at the 57 minute mark, playing the ball from the right side of the box to freshman Samantha Dewey, who knocked in the insurance goal to bring her total to a team-high five scores for the season.Â
Xavier continued its attack on offense one game after posting the second-most shots in Xavier history against Marian (33). The Musketeers posted a second-straight game of over 20 shots, outshooting the Jaguars 23 to 17 with six different players getting in on the action. Carlson and Dewey led the Musketeers with four shots each on the evening.
The Xavier defense, anchored by junior goalkeeper Rachel Piccus, collected a second-straight shutout, and its third of the season.
"Anytime you get a shutout, it's a great night," said Sherwood. "Especially against a team that's as competitive as they are. They're very well coached, they're feisty, they'll pressure you and they've got some really good athletes, so for us to endure that and come out with a couple goals while not giving away too many quality chances was a good night, for sure."
The Musketeer backline shut down the Jag's most prolific weapon on offense, limiting IUPUI's leading scorer, Tori Minnich, to just one shot. Piccus collected seven saves and her fourth win of the season as the Musketeers are allowing just 1.33 goals per game through six games.
"The back group has done a nice job. Rachel Piccus made two really crucial saves and if those guys can keep getting better and keep us organized we'll be in good shape as we continue with our non-conference slate."
The Musketeers have three matches left before starting into BIG EAST play, with EKU up next.
"Eastern Kentucky will be kind of a cornered dog situation. They had a coaching change on short notice and they've been gutting it out in some games. They'll certainly be looking to come in here and knock off a BIG EAST opponent."
