Senior forward connects for game-winner in 105th minute at DePaul
CHICAGO – Senior Calum Latham capitalized off a loose ball in the box, connecting with Josh Grant and burying a shot upper left in the 105th minute to send Xavier men's soccer to a 1-0 double overtime win against DePaul on Saturday at Wish Field.
Latham, a Springfield, Ohio native, netted his first career game-winner on his second tally of the season – helping XU extend its winning streak to five, its longest since 2013. Grant was credited with the assist on the sequence.
The Musketeers (7-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) also pushed their scoreless streak to four-plus matches (389:52), while DePaul dropped to 1-7 overall, 0-1 BIG EAST with its first overtime loss of the season.
After holding a 5-3 lead in shots at the break, XU was mostly frustrated by DePaul's backline – piling up chances off fouls and restarts only to see DePaul clear away a number of balls in the box.
Jalen Brown, who led XU with four shots in the match, dispossessed a DePaul defender in the 68th minute and fired a rocket from the top of the box only to see DePaul's Mack Robinson wrap it up with a diving save.
The Blue Demons had a good look on a counter just minutes later, but Simon Megally scuffed the shot and Dallas Jaye buried the ball. It was all-Xavier in the ensuing minutes, as Brown misfired in the 75th and Eric McWoods was foiled on a 1-on-1 play off a strong run.
With time running low, Xavier had another great look in the 86th, as Latham found Walker Andriot in space. Andriot played off to Alex Ridsdale, but the shot was a bit weak and swallowed by Robinson.
The Blue Demons had a couple chances to steal the win late, earning a corner in the 88th and finding a streaking Erik Rodriguez in the 89th only to see his shot go wide right.
Majed Osman had Xavier's first solid chance in overtime, registering a left-footed shot in the 94th minute that was played well by Robinson.
The Musketeers led 13-8 in shots and 6-4 in shots on goal, also holding a 5-3 edge in corners. Jaye made four saves, improving to 5-0 on the season in net.
As a program, Xavier improved to 2-1 overall in BIG EAST openers. The Musketeers were playing in their first overtime match since Nov. 20, 2014 against Monmouth – a 2-1 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Xavier returns to the pitch next Saturday, Oct. 3, hosting No. 25 Georgetown at XU Soccer Complex. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
