Musketeers Top Friars in Three Sets on Saturday Afternoon

Four Xavier players post seven or more kills in the win
CINCINNATI – Xavier volleyball topped Providence in three sets (25-7, 25-15, 26-24) on Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center. The Musketeers moved to 8-9 (2-2 BIG EAST), while the Friars fell to 12-8 (0-4 BIG EAST).
• The Musketeers improve to 6-0 all-time against the Friars.
• Abbey Bessler led the Musketeers with a match-high nine kills. She also added nine digs as she fell just short of her 10th double-double of the year.
• Sofia Peterson added eight kills, while Alexis Newsome and Kristen Massa both chipped in seven. Newsome also added a match-high .429 hitting percentage.
• Xavier had 3.5 more blocks (6.5-3.0) than Providence, led by Alexis Newsome who had four.
• Meredith Klare recorded a match-high 17 digs. Samantha Foti added nine to go along with two of the Musketeers four service aces.
• McKena Estes dished out a match-high 18 assists. Fellow setter Mackenzi Humm also had 17.
• Xavier posted its highest hitting percentage, .345, in the opening set. The Musketeers jumped out to a 12-5 lead before closing the set on a 13-2 run.
• Lauren Frilling paced the Musketeers with four kills, while Abbey Bessler and Samantha Foti both had five digs.
• The Musketeers never trailed in the frame and led by eight (16-8) midway through set. Xavier pulled away for the 25-15 win capped by back-to-back kills from Alexis Newsome and Abbey Bessler to close set.
• Alexis Newsome hit .444 with five kills, while Abbey Bessler had four kills. Meredith Klare had nine digs in the set.
• The final set had 11 ties and five lead changes. Tied at 24, the Musketeers got back-to-back kills from Abbey Bessler and Sofia Peterson to win the match.
• Sofia Peterson and Kristen Massa both had six kills in the set.
• Xavier returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Marquette. The matchup in Milwaukee is the first of three straight BIG EAST road matches.
