Women's Soccer Outshoots Seton Hall but Falls 1-0 on Sunday

Musketeers own 13-8 advantage on attempts
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Xavier women's soccer turned up the offensive pressure on Seton Hall in the second half on Sunday afternoon, but a ball deflected into the goal gave the Pirates the 1-0 win. Xavier moves to 6-8-1 overall, and 0-5 in BIG EAST play. Five of the Musketeers' setbacks, including three in conference play, have come by a single goal.
Â
Xavier and Seton Hall played to a 0-0 draw through the first 45 minutes of play, with the Pirates going into the break with a 5-2 advantage on shots. The Musketeers came out of halftime with increased intensity on the offensive end, out-shooting the Pirates 11-3 in the second period.
Kenadie Carlson led the Musketeers with four shots, getting the first opportunity of the second half and several more good looks of the foot of Samantha Dewey. Twice Dewey crossed to Carlson on the left side of the box, with the first look, in the 58th minute, going just wide of the goal, and the second look, 10 minutes later, collected for a save.
The best opportunity of the day for the Musketeers came off a look from Carlson from the right corner. The shot clipped the post and rolled in front of the open side of the net near a waiting Courtney Lankford with an opportunity to chip it in to the open corner of the net. Lankford was boxed out by a SHU defender and the Pirates' goalkeeper fell on the ball to erase Xavier's opportunity for what would have been a game-tying goal.
In addition to creating opportunities for her teammates, Dewey finished with three shots on the day, including a final opportunity for the Musketeers to score the equalizer, shooting straight-on in the 18-yard box in the 87th minute, a look that was blocked by a Pirate defender.
The Musketeers out-shot the Pirates 13-8 overall, with opportunities spread among six different Musketeers, including Tori Doss, whose header in the 71st minute off an Addie Englehart pass  went just wide of the net.
Â
The Musketeer defense, anchored by Maddie Tierney's 90 minutes of play, held the Pirates scoreless for over 75 minutes. The Pirates, who held the advantage on shots in the first half, had their on-goal chances limited to just a pair in the second period.
SHU took the lead in the 76th minute when SHU's Marissa Aniolowski got the ball behind the bulk of the Xavier defense. Her shot deflected off of a Musketeer defender and went into the goal for the game-winning score.Â
Rachel Piccus played the full 90 minutes, collecting four saves on the day. Courtney Kobashigawa and Carly Alfano each played over 80 minutes on the back line as Xavier limited the opportunities for SHU offense to restart in the deep third, with the Pirates earning just one corner kick overall.
Â
"I thought we were really poor in the first half but had a very good second half. None of that means much if you can't score goals, in this conference you're not going to win games. The hard part to swallow is to lose on an own goal, with that shot going wide and try to clear it and unfortunately, it goes in the goal. Again, it comes down to not executing when we create good chances."
Â
The Musketeers return home for a pair of matches, starting by hosting Villanova on Oct. 15 at noon on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The match is the first game of a double-header with Xavier men's soccer, who will also host Villanova. Following the match with the Wildcats, Xavier hosts St. John's on Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
