Women’s Tennis Edged Out By No. 69 Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Xavier women's tennis team lost a heartbreaker of a match against No. 69 Michigan State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon to go 1-1 on the weekend.
"This is what college tennis is all about," said head coach Doug Matthews. "Two teams competing their hearts out and leaving everything out there. MSU played great and proved to be a couple points better than us today. This experience will make us a better team moving forward."
The Musketeers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead by clinching the doubles point and a win at No. 1 singles by Sydney Liggins over Lexi Baylis, 6-4, 6-1.
Michigan State earned their first point at the No. 4 singles position as Aslina Chua beat Alex Brinker, 6-3, 6-3, and tied the match as Lauren Ghidotti fell to Emily Metcalf, 7-5, 6-4.
Amina Ismail put Xavier within one by beating Athena Trouillot, 6-3, 7-5, but the Spartans responded by tying the match at 3-3 with Emily Meyers beating Sophia Abelson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Coming down to the No. 2 singles position Cristina Di Lorenzo dropped the first set to Davina Nguyen, 2-6, then came back to win the second, 6-2, forcing a third set where Nguyen beat Di Lorenzo, 7-5, to give the Spartans the victory.
The Musketeers are now 5-3 on the season and are back in action Friday, Feb. 19 against Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
