11-point, 12-board, 12-assist performance marks first Musketeer to accomplish feat in nearly five years
CINCINNATI – Myles Davis posted 11 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists, the first triple-double by a Musketeer since 2011, to help hold off a second-half surge by the No. 23/20 Providence Friars. The Musketeers prevailed, 85-74, to move to 23-3 overall and 11-3 in BIG EAST play during the second annual GE Aviation Military Appreciation game.
Davis' triple-double, which included career highs in rebounds and assists, is the first for a Musketeer since Tu Holloway posted 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Fordham on Feb. 19, 2011.
Jalen Reynolds finished with a double-double, his fourth of the season, after finishing with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Trevon Bluiett finished with 23 points, one off his career high, matching PC's Kris Dunn for game high. Edmond Sumner also added 11 points.
The Friars scored the opening basket before the Musketeers scored nine unanswered to take a 9-2 lead less than three minutes into the game, forcing Providence to call a timeout.
Providence would get to within four before a 10-0 run, featuring a pair of three pointers from Davis, pushed the lead out to 14 at the 12:11 mark. The Musketeers opened the game hitting 4-of-5 from outside the arc.
Xavier extended the lead out to as many as 18 in the first half, led by 17 points for Trevon Bluiett, before a three at the buzzer for PC set the halftime score at 52-37 in favor of the Musketeers.
Sumner added nine for the Musketeers in the first 20 minutes and Remy Abell and J.P. Macura added seven each. Davis dished out seven first-half assists.
The Musketeers shot over 51 percent from the floor in the first half, including and 7-of-12 from three.
Xavier owned a 19-15 advantage on rebounds in the first half, led by seven for Reynolds.
Providence turned the buzzer-beating three at the end of the first half into a 13-2 run to cut the Xavier lead down to seven, 54-47, in the first four minutes of the second half.
The Musketeers responded with 12 straight points to take a 19-point lead, 66-47, with 11:06 left to play.
Xavier extended the lead to as many as 21 before Providence used an 18-3 run to close to within six, 72-66, with under four minutes remaining.
Xavier closed out the game by going 9-of-11 from the free throw line in the final three minutes, including three makes for Davis to bring his point total to double digits, securing the 85-74 win.
Xavier owned a 49-41 advantage on the boards, led by Reynolds' and Davis' double-digit efforts. Xavier owned only a slight advantage on the offensive glass, 13-12, by outscored the Friars 15-7 on second chance points.
During Wednesday's game Xavier and GE Aviation honored veterans and active duty military with events including a pregame reception at the newly remodeled Xavier Center for Veteran's Affairs, to which GE Aviation contributed $100,000 last fall.
