Jacknewitz, Griffiths Solid in Season Debuts as Musketeers Fall 2-1 at ASU

Musketeers will play game three of the series immediately
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Greg Jacknewitz twirled 6.2 innings of two-run ball, but took the hard-luck loss as Xavier baseball dropped its second game at Arizona State, 2-1, on Saturday.
The Musketeers dropped to 0-2 with the loss, struggling to manufacture much offense for the second straight game. Arizona hung on to win behind a solid effort by starter Seth Martinez, who went seven innings and allowed just one unearned run on four hits.

• Xavier collected four hits total in the game, going just 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
• The Musketeers went down in order in the first four innings before Andre Jernigan singled in the fifth. XU had runners on base in each of the last four innings, but couldn't push across the tying run.
• Outfielder Blaine Griffiths made his first start of the season and had a career-best two hit day. The sophomore from West Chester, Ohio drove in Andre Jernigan in the fifth inning to tie the game, 1-1.
• Matt Fallon (1-for-4), Andre Jernigan (1-for-4), David Morton (1-for-1) and Nate Soria (1-for-4) each collected hits for the Musketeers. Soria has now reached base in 34 consecutive games dating back to last season.

• Southpaw Greg Jacknewitz was solid in his season debut, firing 6.2 innings of two-run ball. The junior scattered seven hits and struck out one.
• Freshman Trey Schramm made his Xavier debut, tossing the final 1.1 innings and allowing just two hits.

FIFTH INNING:Â Andre Jernigan singled to center with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error by Martinez. Griffiths followed with a single to left to score Jernigan, tying the game at 1-1 momentarily.

• The Musketeers (0-2) and Sun Devils (2-0) will be back at it on Saturday night, finishing off the doubleheader going at 6 p.m. ET.
• Brandon Johnson is slated to take the ball for the Musketeers.
