Men's Tennis Trumps Pirates, 4-3

GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a five hour, nitty-gritty tennis match, the Xavier Musketeers were able to oust the East Carolina Pirates, 4-3, February 5th.
In doubles, Xavier earned the early advantage over East Carolina by winning the point. At the No. 1 spot, Zach Mueck and Matt Bishop paved the way for the Musketeers, defeating Tendai Tapfuma and James Ling with a tight, 7-5, battle. The Sophomore tandem, Arthur Stefani and Gabriel Chaves Araujo followed up, serving Will Bissett and Kasey Countee a loss, 6-3.
In singles, each of the first three matches went to three sets. At the No. 1 and 3 spots, Zach Mueck and Matt Bishop improved to 2-0, respectively this spring season, putting Xavier in a fine position to seal the deal against the Pirates. Arthur Stefani also earned a win, defeating Fedric Lehfeldt in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, to solidify the victory for the Musketeers.
"Today was a quality road win," Head Coach, Doug Matthews, stated. "We played with great energy and effort for the entire five hour match. There were a couple times we could have controlled our emotions a little better, but we are going to learn from it and regroup for another tough match tomorrow."
