Baseball Drops First Midweek Game of Season at Wright State

Griffiths recorded his fourth multi-hit game of the year on Tuesday night
FAIRBORN, Ohio – Xavier baseball dropped its first midweek game of the 2016 season at Wright State on Tuesday night, falling 4-1 at Nischwitz Stadium. The Musketeers had their three-game win streak snapped as they moved to 3-8 on the year. The Raiders, the 2015 Horizon League Champions, moved to 7-6 with the home-opening win.
• Xavier recorded five hits on the night with Blaine Griffiths (2-for-4) picking up his second multi-hit performance in as many games and his fourth of the season.
• Daniel Rizzie (1-for-3, R), Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-4, RBI) and Andre Jernigan (1-for-2) also collected hits for the Musketeers.
• Xavier was held without a stolen base for only the second time this season. The Musketeers entered the contest ranked third nationally in steals (29) and first in steals per game (2.9).
• Joe Gellenbeck extended his hitting streak to a team-best seven games.
• Daniel Rizzie scored his fourth run of the season, while Joe Gellenbeck's RBI was his sixth of the season - tied for first on the team.
• Sophomore Damien Richard (0-1) went 2.1 innings in the first start of his career. The right-handed pitcher surrendered five hits and three runs (two earned), while walking two batters.
• Trey Schramm tossed 3.2 innings of relief in his fourth appearance of the season. The freshman allowed only one hit and threw two strikeouts.
• Junior Brad Kirschner pitched the final two innings of the game, allowing two hits and one run. He also recorded three strikeouts.
FOURTH INNING: Xavier scored its lone run on a one-out RBI single to left center by Joe Gellenbeck. Daniel Rizzie scored the run after reaching base on a throwing error earlier in the inning.
• The Musketeers travel to college baseball powerhouse Vanderbilt for a three-game set in Nashville. First pitch in the series is set for Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m.
