CINCINNATI – Xavier men's soccer defeated Cedarville 2-0 on Saturday night, getting a goal in each half to improve to 2-2-1 in spring action.
Todd Pratzner tallied in the first half for Xavier, blasting in a header off a Matt Nance cross to give XU at 1-0 lead. Jacob Goodall scored the second goal of the match, finishing a slotted cross from Matt Vasquenza in the second half.
"It was a funny game," said head coach Andy Fleming. "I don't think we were great nor were we bad, we just lacked the tempo and sharpness that we are capable of. I felt Cedarville dictated the tempo of the game more than we did. We scored two good goals, both off nice assists and Jake [Ciricillo] made a big play to stop the PK to keep it at 1-0 when we clearly took our foot off the pedal after scoring. We are a bit banged up and used several players in various roles, which was nice to see. We have a week to regroup and get ready for our spring "final exam" against a good Michigan State team in an event that's very important and special to our program."
Jake Ciricillo made a nice play in goal in the second half, taking away a Cedarville penalty kick opportunity with a diving save. Josh Grant and Derrick Otim also had strong outings for Xavier.
Xavier caps its spring schedule on Saturday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. with the fifth annual Devin's Game in support of Down Syndrome Awareness.
