Xavier couldn't complete a comeback on Saturday, stranding four in the last three innings
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Xavier baseball fell 3-1 in game two of its weekend series against Morehead State on Saturday at Hayden Field, falling to 11-20 overall on the season.
Morehead State improved to 18-13 overall behind some dominant pitching. Starter Aaron Leasher struck out 11 in seven innings, allowing just three hits and one unearned run. The Eagles' closer, Tyler Keele, came in and struck out all six batters he faced to slam the door on an XU eighth inning rally.Â
Â
• XU mustered just three hits, tying for its second-fewest in a game this season. The Musketeers also struck out a season-high 17 times in a frustrating afternoon at the plate.
• Rylan Bannon continued his a 10-game hitting streak, going 1-for-3. The sophomore third baseman is hitting .412 (14-for-34) during the streak.
• Xavier also got hits from Nate Soria (1-for-4, R) and Chris Givin (1-for-4).
• Dan Rizzie saw a nine-game hitting streak come to a close with an 0-for-4 game. The senior catcher is batting .383 (23-for-60) with four homers in his last 15 starts.
• XU worked two walks, giving the team 32 free passes in its last seven games.
Â
• Starter Brad Kirschner was effective, working around trouble to get through a season-high six innings. The junior lefty allowed three runs, all in the third inning, and struck out two in his fourth start of the year.
• Freshman Matt Kent continues to impress out of the bullpen, as the righty tossed three scoreless innings for the second time this week (Kent also went three scoreless on Tuesday at Ball State).
• Kent, who allowed two hits and struck out two today, has now thrown nine innings without allowing an earned run to start his Xavier career.
Â
EIGHTH INNING:Â Nate Soria led off the inning, squaring up the first pitch he saw for a single to left field. Rylan Bannon followed with a looper to right, putting runners on the corners with no outs. After Bannon stole second and Matt Fallon worked a walk, Morehead State went to its closer. Will LaRue batted next, grounding into a fielder's choice to score Soria on a wild throw. The late rally was snuffed out, however, by three straight strikeouts after the play at the plate.
Â
• Xavier and Morehead State close out the weekend series on Sunday, April 10 at Hayden Field. First pitch has been re-scheduled for 1 p.m.
• The Musketeers will shave some hair following tomorrow's final out in support of the Vs. Cancer Foundation.
