Kenadie Carlson knocks in the game-winner in the 73rd minute
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Xavier's women's soccer team matched its season high with three tallies to hold off Youngstown State for a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon. Three Musketeers, Tori Doss, Samantha Dewey and Kenadie Carlson, scored as XU moved to 5-2-1 on the season including a 4-1-1 record on the road.
Xavier struck first, going ahead in the 32nd minute on Tori Doss' third goal of the season, knocking the ball in off the assist from Samantha Dewey.
After Youngstown State tied it up in the first half, the Musketeers retook the lead in the second half when Dewey, off the assist from Kenadie Carlson, used a header to get the ball into the left corner of the goal in the 60th minute.
YSU again responded, tying the game at 2-2 shortly after, but the Musketeers continued to pressure on offense in the second half, taking 11 of XU's 15 total shots after the break. Xavier retook the lead again in the 73rd minute when Carlson took advantage of YSU miscues to get the ball over the goalkeeper's head, giving Xavier a 3-2 lead on her second goal of the season.
The Musketeers finished with six shots on goal, with another three attempts on frame that hit off the crossbar.
The Penguins answered each of Xavier's first two goals in short order, keeping the score in a draw for the majority of the match.
Seven minutes after Doss' first half goal, YSU's Allison Green scored to knot the game at 1-1.
After playing in a 1-1 draw until Dewey's goal put Xavier ahead 2-1, Youngstown State took less than two minutes to answers, tying the game 2-2 on an Ernestina Abambila shot from 19 yards out.
Xavier limited the YSU chances for the remainder of the half, making Carlson's goal with less than 20 minutes to play the game-winner.
Rachel Piccus and Toni Bizzarro split time in frame for a third straight game, with Piccus starting the match, and Bizzarro finishing the game out. Each finished with a save and a goal against, with Bizzarro picking up the second win of her college career.
The backline of Carly Alfano, Ellie Eckerle and Courtney Kobashigawa each played the full 90 minutes.
"We weren't sure which Youngstown State team we were going to get today, but we got the one that tied Duquesne 1-1. They did present some challenges for us but 20 minutes in we still felt really good about things. I think it was also a huge challenge for our kids to watch one of their own teammates be carried off on a backboard, that took a little emotional toll on our players, but I think we did a great job dealing with that circumstance. We ended up hanging around and winning on a Sunday, which is always a positive. We have two non-conference games left before we start the BIG EAST and we're looking forward to Friday night."
Please Note: A Xavier student-athlete was transported to an area hospital late in the first half. She is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.
Xavier's next match takes the Musketeers to Athens, Ohio to face the Ohio Bobcats on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4:00 p.m. After OU, Xavier will travel to IUPUI on Sunday, Sept. 18, before jumping into the BIG EAST slate at DePaul and Providence.
