Musketeers End BIG EAST Road Swing with 3-1 Loss at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Xavier volleyball ended its BIG EAST road swing with a four-set loss (22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 22-25) at Seton Hall on Saturday night.
The Musketeers (7-8, 1-1 BIG EAST) concluded its 15-match schedule away from Cintas Center to open the season. The Pirates moved to 8-8 (2-1 BIG EAST) with the win, picking up only their second win in the series history between the two teams (Xavier leads, 5-2).
• Abbey Bessler posted her ninth double-double of the year, recording a team-high 15 kills to go along with 12 digs. The senior outside hitter added four blocks and a .343 hitting percentage.
• Sofia Peterson added 13 kills a team-high .423 hitting percentage. The senior right side has recorded 10 or more kills in eight matches this season, including three in a row.
• Xavier had four more total team blocks (9-5) than Seton Hall. Alexis Newsome paced Xavier with five (four assists, one solo). The middle blocker chipped in eight kills.
• Meredith Klare posted a team-high 16 digs, while Mackenzi Humm dished out a match-high 28 assists.
• Xavier never led by as many as four, 12-8, before the Pirates battled back to take their first lead of the match, 19-18. Seton Hall scored six of the final 10 points to win the opening set, 25-22.
• Xavier hit .351 in the opening set, led by Sofia Peterson's .625 attack percentage. The senior had five kills in eight attempts. Alexis Newsome and Abbey Bessler both added four kills in the frame.
• Trailing 13-11, the Musketeers scored four straight points to regain a lead they would never relinquish. Xavier recorded three kills in its final four points of the set, winning 25-20.
• Xavier hit .464 in the second set, while Abbey Bessler had six kills.
• Seton Hall jumped out to an early 10-5 advantage and led by as many as seven, 20-13, down the stretch. The Pirates scored four of the final five points of the set to win, 25-18.
• Seton Hall never trailed in the set. Xavier got within one late, 22-21, before the Pirates closed the match on a 3-1 run.
• Xavier opens the home portion of its schedule on Friday, Sept. 30 against Creighton. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
