Brown becomes third Musketeer to be drafted since 2010
LOS ANGELES - Jalen Brown of Xavier men's soccer was selected by New York City FC in the second round (38th overall) of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft on Friday at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The NYC FC website described Brown as, "an explosive forward who has demonstrated good link-up play and ability to beat defenders in one-on-ones at the Combine."
After a week at the MLS Combine and a massive open field goal in the final exhibition of the event, Brown becomes the third Musketeer to be drafted in the last six years.
Nick Hagglund was the last XU soccer player drafted prior to Brown, going 10th overall to Toronto FC in 2014. Luke Spencer, who went to New England with the 22nd pick of the 2013 draft, was Xavier's first-ever MLS draft pick. All three picks XU picks have come in the first two rounds.
NYC FC adds Brown after making an appearance in the MLS Playoffs in 2016, just the side's second season as an MLS franchise. The roster for NYC FC features standout Spanish striker David Villa, and the team recently added forward Sean Okoli who starred with FC Cincinnati during the team's inaugural season in the USL.
Brown, an Indianapolis-native and business major, was one of Xavier's top offensive threats throughout his career (2013-16). He recorded several career-bests in 2016, including starts (19), goals (6), assists (3), shots (46) and shots on goal (20). He led the team in goals and ranked second with 15 points, 46 shots and 20 shots on goal. A workhorse up top, Brown ranked fifth on team with 1,524 minutes played.
He also developed a reputation for coming up huge in big moments during his Xavier career, scoring five total game-winners.
During the 2014 season, Brown was instrumental in XU's run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. He supplied a regular season game-winner at No. 15 Marquette in addition to the deciding goal against No. 8 Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals, which sent XU to its first-ever league title match.
In 2015, he buried the game-winner in a historic road win over No. 2 Notre Dame.
Over his career, Brown helped Xavier to 45 wins and was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team, BIG EAST All-Tournament Team and to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll multiple times.
