Swimming Heads to Bowling Green to Face Falcons, Tiffin on Saturday

CINCINNATI – After a strong performance for both Xavier men's and women's swimming against Cleveland State at home, the Musketeers continue the weekend by heading up I-75 to Bowling Green to face the Falcons, along with Tiffin University on Saturday, Oct. 21. Events at BGSU will begin at 1:00 p.m.

ABOUT BOWLING GREEN |
- Bowling Green, which only fields a women's team, opened the season on Friday, Sept. 29 with a 214.5-77.5 victory over St. Francis University, taking the top spot in 14 of 16 events.
- Three Falcons won multiple individual events in the pool against St. Francis, Jordan Andrusak (200 IM - 2:08.71, 100 back - 58.94), Sarah Hennings (100 butterfly - 58.49, 50 fly - 26.25) and Nikki Borgerding (50 breast – 30.96, 100 breast – 1:06.65).
- Last season, Xavier hosted Bowling Green, collecting four first place finishes, including Emily Saugstad's first place finish in the 100 free, as well as the 200 free relay, with Paxtyn Drew, Caroline Gaertner, Abby Garner and Emily Conners with a time of 1:37.78, out touching the Falcon's "A" team by over two seconds.
- The Musketeer women fell by a final score of 141-111 to the Falcons.
- BGSU's women finished sixth of eight last season at the MAC Championships.

ABOUT TIFFIN |
- Tiffin opened the season on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Gannon with the men falling 152-106 and the women losing 211-29.
- The men's squad were led by three multiple-event winners, Yun-Hung Tan (200 fly - 1:55.46, 100 free - 47.92), Jonah Sumfleth (50 freestyle – 21.60, 100 fly – 51.96) and Jan Suchan (100 back – 50.74, 200 back – 1:53.30).
- The Musketeers last faced off with Tiffin in November of 2013. Last season, TU's men finished 5th of 7 teams in the GLIAC, while the women finished 7th of 8 squads.

WOMEN'S LAST TIME OUT |
- The Xavier women picked up the win over Cleveland State, 161-97, after taking the top spot in 11 of 14 events.
- Xavier opened the meet by taking the top spot in the 200 medley relay, with Paxtyn Drew, Becca Titterton, Caroline Gaertnerand Emily Conners touching the wall in 1:48.08.
- Emma Kauffeld set the second fastest time in the BIG EAST so far this season in the 1000 free to take first.
- Paxtyn Drew collected a pair of individual wins in the 100 back and the 200 back.
- Emily Conners, reigning BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week on the women's side, swept the freestyle sprints, finishing the 50 free in 23.72 and the 100 free in 51.93.
- Samantha White took the top spot in the 200 breast and led the Musketeers in the 200 breast with a third-place finish.
- Caroline Gaertner took the win in the 100 fly.
- Alison Herman touched the wall first in the 200 IM.
- Paxtyn Drew, Conners, Abby Garner and Caroline Gaertner took first in the 400 free relay to close out the meet.

MEN'S LAST TIME OUT |
- Xavier collected the first win for the program over Cleveland State on record, outscoring the Vikings, 162-98, after taking first in 10 of 14 events.
- Xavier opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay for Alex Sironen, Matthew Dyer, Brandon Abboud and Sam Johanns.
- Dyer also collected the top spot in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM.
- Nick Mahoney set the top time in the BIG EAST this year on his way to winning the 1000 free.
- Sironen collected the win the the 100 back.
- Landon Clark touched the wall first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.66.
- Christian Thomas' time of 21.81 was good for first place in the 50 free.
- Chase Baldwin took first in the 100 back.
- Xavier closed out the meet with a win in the 400 free for Johanns, Abboud, Enrique Hernandez and Thomas.

WEEKLY AWARDS |
- Emily Conners started her sophomore season off with a splash, collecting a win in six events through the first two meets of the season to earn first BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week of the 2017-18 season.
- At the season-opening Butler Double Duals, Conners was a part of three-first place finishes, winning the 50 free with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 23.66, the top time by a woman in the conference so far this season.Conners, a native of Sunfish Lake, Minn., took part in the 400 medley relay at Butler, setting a 100 free split time of 51.93, the fastest 100 free time among women in the BIG EAST so far this season. Conners also took the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay. Both relays collected the wins as the Xavier women won the six-team event for the third straight year.
- At Indiana State with Olivet Nazarene, Conners collected three more event wins, sweeping the freestyle sprints, taking first in the 50 free with a time of 23.82, a new pool record for the Vigo County Aquatic Center, and winning the 100 free with a time of 51.98, another pool record and a BIG EAST qualifying time. Conners also took the freestyle leg of the first-place winning 200 medley relay at ISU.
- This is Conners' second weekly award of her Xavier career, also earning the honor during the week of Oct. 18, 2016.

UP NEXT |
- Next weekend the Musketeers will head to Morgantown, W. Va. to face off with the West Virginia Mountaineers, along with BIG EAST foe Seton Hall. The two-day meet begins Friday, Oct. 27 at 6:00 p.m. and continues the next day, with Saturday events beginning at 11:00 a.m.
