Musketeers Come Up Short in Double-Overtime Thriller at Villanova

Raeshaun Gaffney led Xavier with 16 points and 12 rebounds
VILLANOVA, Pa. – Xavier women's basketball came up short in double overtime at Villanova on Friday night, 76-71, at The Pavilion. The nationally televised game on FS1 featured eight ties and eight lead changes.
The Musketeers (11-15, 3-12 BIG EAST) dropped their second straight, while the Wildcats (15-11, 10-5 BIG EAST) won their fourth consecutive game.
Xavier led 67-65 with 4:29 left in double overtime before Villanova guard Adrianna Hahn scored the Wildcats final 11 points of the game to pull off the victory. She finished the game with 33 points on 10-for-21 shooting.
• Raeshaun Gaffney posted her third career double-double as the senior guard had 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She added five assists on the night.
• Xavier committed a season-low eight turnovers. The Musketeers also held a 38-12 advantage in points in the paint.
• Kindell Fincher and Marquia Turner both chipped in 14 points and three rebounds as the two guards combined to go 11-for-22 from the floor with five 3-pointers. Turner also dished out a game-high seven assists.
• Maddison Blackwell added six points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Anniina Äijänen chipped in seven points on 3-for-5 shooting.
• Xavier held a 46-44 advantage on the glass. The Musketeers also had two more assists (17-15) than the Wildcats.
• Villanova knocked down three 3-pointers in the opening minutes to engineer an 11-4 lead and force a Xavier timeout at the 5:44 mark. The Musketeers battled back to get within four in the final minute of the quarter as Villanova held a slim, 21-17, advantage at the end of the frame.
• Marquia Turner had five points and three assists, while Imani Partlow added four points. The Musketeers hit 57.1 percent of their shot attempts.
• Maddison Blackwell hit a jumper on Xavier's first possession to get the Musketeers within two, 21-19. Villanova responded by scoring six unanswered to take an eight-point lead. The Wildcats led by as many as nine, 30-21, at the 6:43 mark before the Musketeers fought back.
• Xavier went on a 7-0 run to get within two, 30-28. Villanova pushed its lead out to five in the closing minutes before Marquia Turner hit a layup as time expired to make the score, 35-32, at the break.
• Marquia Turner led the Musketeers with nine points on 4-for-7 at intermission, while Raeshaun Gaffney added six. Xavier hit 55.6 percent (15-for-27) of its shot attempts in the half and held a 17-14 advantage on the glass.
• Both teams cooled off on the offensive end of the floor as neither team scored in double figures in the quarter. Xavier and Villanova both scored nine points as the Wildcats maintained its three-point lead, 44-41, at the end of the quarter.
• Xavier opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run capped by a Marquia Turner layup – giving the Musketeers their first lead of the game, 46-44, at the 6:40 mark. The fourth quarter had four lead changes and three ties.
• Xavier led 56-53 with 30 seconds left in regulation before Adrianna Hahn sank a three pointer with 12 seconds on the clock, sending the game into overtime.
• Neither team led by more than one possession in the first overtime. Xavier led 65-63 with seven seconds on the clock before the Wildcats went coast-to-coast to score a layup and force another overtime.
• Imani Partlow scored the first basket of the period to give Xavier the lead, but Villanova hit a three pointer on its next possession to regain the lead. The Wildcats never relinquished the lead and sealed the win down the stretch with 11 points from Adrianna Hahn.
