Ghidotti's Three-Set Win Leads Women's Tennis to a 4-3 Victory

CINCINNATI – The Xavier women's team defeated Miami University 4-3 Sunday afternoon in its home opener at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. It also marked XU's second straight win.
The Musketeers swept the RedHawks in doubles as Cristina Di Lorenzo and Lauren Ghidotti won their fourth straight match as they defeated Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina 6-0 in the No.1 spot. In the No.2 doubles, Sydney Liggins and Sophia Abelson also won 6-2.
Every point was crucial for Ghidotti in the third set of her singles match. Here are some of Ghidotti's post-win comments, "Miami is always a big rival so it is great to get that win, whatever the score is. Obviously the third set was a big help with all my teammates screaming after every single point. That's just the kind of team we are, and I'm lucky to be on this team."
Head coach Doug Matthews was excited about the win. "We've played a lot of close matches this season and we haven't been able to win one," said Matthews. "To play a close match and win one against a good team like Miami is very encouraging. Hopefully this can help us with our confidence in the next tight match.
"We played three three freshmen in singles and they have all been good so far. Lauren's match was obviously huge to clinch it for us but Rachael's win at No. 4 vs. a very good veteran player was a big key to the tough victory today."
