Men’s Golf Heads to South Carolina for BIG EAST Championship
04.28.17 | Men's Golf
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. - The Xavier men's golf team travels to South Carolina today for the BIG EAST Championship. The three-day event returns for the fourth straight year to the Callawassie Island Golf Club on the Magnolia and Dogwood Courses, which will be playing 7,047 yards and par 72.
The Musketeers will be competing against Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Villanova with an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship on the line. Xavier comes into the tournament as the ninth ranked team, according to Golfstat.
Head coach Brian McCants is bringing two seniors and three underclassmen. Matt Wetterich will be in the number one position, followed by Daniel Jaramillo, Hunter Roberts, Eduardo Rivera Nicholls, and Fox Morrissey.
"I think we're going to surprise people this weekend at Callawassie Island," said McCants. "We have been performing at a higher level the last four weeks of the season and I like the team that's going to be competing at the BIG EAST Championship. I also know this: as gritty and competitive as this team is to post the lowest score possible, if we can convert on more of our birdie opportunities, we'll have a chance to win next Tuesday."
Senior Matt Wetterich comes into the tournament ranked 30th in stroke average in the conference (75.77), while Fox Morrissey is 36th (76.17).
Last year, Xavier finished second as a team behind defending champion Georgetown. Xavier had two individuals finish in the top-15.
Sunday morning's tee times will be determined by seed and player rankings, while Monday and Tuesday morning's tee times will be assembled from the previous day's leaderboard. One round will take place each day beginning at 8 a.m. eastern time.
Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
